History of the hurricane cocktail
In 1940s New Orleans, rum was in abundant supply—especially at a small bar tucked away in the French Quarter called Pat O'Brien’s. To help make use of the surplus, the bar crafted a vibrant and flavorful cocktail known as the Hurricane. This tropical drink, a mix of rum, passion fruit, orange, lime, and a splash of grenadine, quickly became a local favorite. Its name pays homage to the powerful storms that frequently sweep through the city.
FAQ
-
The hurricane cocktail has both light and dark rum.
-
Yes - there are two types of rum in the cocktail.
-
Absolutely! Swap the rum for extra passion fruit sorbet and orange or lime juice.
-
Though traditional hurricane cocktails actually have their own glass, for punch I love to use a coupe glass, because I can omit adding ice to the glass which can water down the fizziness provided by the sorbet and seltzer water.
Helpful Kitchen Tools
punch mug or or highball glass
shaker with a strainer lid
Ingredients
1 ounce light rum
1/2 ounce dark rum
1 round scoop passionfruit sorbet
1 ounce pineapple juice
1 ounce lime juice
1/2 ounce granadine (try my homemade grenadine)
Ice
Seltzer water
edible flower for garnish (optional)
How to make a hurricane punch
Fill a punch mug or glass with crushed ice.
Add light and dark rum, passion fruit sorbet, pineapple juice, lime juice, and grenadine to a shaker. Fill the shaker with ice, pop the lid on tight and shake vigorously for 15 seconds. (Its okay if there are still a few small chunks of sorbet, they will dissolve once the seltzer is added.)
Pour the contents of the shaker into the punch mug or glass. Top off with seltzer water and garnish with an edible flower.
