Why you’ll love painkiller cocktail

History of the painkiller cocktail

Though it is conisdered a tiki style drink and served at tiki bars, its origins are Caribbean rather than South Pacific. The Painkiller cocktail is a trademark of Pusser’s Rum and was invented in the British Virgin Islands at a little bar called the Soggy Dollar Bar in the 1970s. The bartender credited with inventing the cocktail, Daphne Henderson, mixed a blend of Pusser’s Rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, coconut cream, and nutmeg and it became so popular that it was adapted by other bartenders and dubbed the Painkiller.

FAQ

  • Dark rum. More specifically, Pusser’s rum is the classic choice.

  • A painkiller contains orange juice in addition to the pineapple and coconut cream, whereas a piña colada does not contain orange juice and is simply a blend of pineapple juice and coconut cream.

  • It can be different levels of alcoholic strength depending of the amount of rum added. This recipe calls for two ounces of rum which is standard and does make it a little bit strong. For less strength, try adding only one ounce of rum.
